Evaluation of fpa’s 'Sleepin Safe,
Sexin Safe' project
Young People in Focus have been commissioned by fpa to evaluate a ‘Sleepin safe, Sexin Safe’ course, designed to educate and inform homeless young people about sexual health and relationships.
The project aims to increase homeless young people’s knowledge of sexual health, encourage their use of sexual health services, and also help sexual health services to have a better understanding of the needs and challenges facing homeless young people.
The course is being implemented in London and the North-East of England, and consists of 12 modules covering topics such as contraception, STIs, relationships, sexual behaviour, and self-esteem.
The purpose of the evaluation is to assess the impacts of the course on young people’s knowledge about sexual health, their use of sexual health services, and effects in other areas of their lives such as confidence and self-esteem. Additionally, the evaluation provides suggestions about how the course can be improved for its ongoing implementation.
A range of data are being used, including:
- A database of young people attending the course
- In-depth interviews with a sample of young people attending the course
- In-depth interviews with service providers
- Post-course questionnaires completed by young people and course facilitators
The evaluation will run from 2009 to 2011. Findings from the first year of evaluation will be available in autumn 2009.
