Young people’s views about post-16 education opportunities in the Worthing area

Project background

In 2004, TSA was funded to explore young people’s perspectives of post-16 educational opportunities in the Worthing area. The project was funded by the Sussex Learning and Skills Council (SLSC). The LSC commissioned the research because of a concern that young people in the Worthing area (in Sussex) are increasingly deciding to pursue further education in colleges outside of the area. One of the main aims of the research was to draw out what it is that keeps young learners in the area, and conversely, what it is that draws them further a field.

The study

The research was undertaken during June-December 2004. The study was conducted through focus groups, individual interviews, and short questionnaires. We explored the views of those who are already in further education, and those who were in the process of making their choices. Thus students from both Year 11 (ie 15-16 year-olds) and in their first year of college (ie 16-17 year-olds) took part. Sixteen sites were involved in the study, including ten secondary schools, two FE colleges, and four other Sussex-based colleges situated outside of the Worthing area. Data was collected from over 80 students in total.

The young people were asked their views about the colleges inside and outside of their local area, and whether they felt there was enough on offer to students. Related issues were also be explored, such as the students’ views of the advice and guidance provided when they are making decisions about their future. The study also looked at students’ general views about staying on in education, or leaving, at age 16.

A full research report on this project has now been completed, and is available from TSA. A four-page summary is also available. The results are now being considered by the LSC, in order to develop policies and practices based on the findings.

Project staff

Louise Cox, Kerry Devitt and Debi Roker were responsible for the project.
