Projects and organisations in the south-east which support the parents of young people: A Directory
Background
This project developed from a previous TSA project, which was funded by the regional Teenage Pregnancy Co-ordinator and DPAS. It involved the production of a ‘Toolkit’ of research and resources, designed for use by practitioners who were working with parents in the youth justice system. A particular focus of the Teenage Pregnancy strategy is to provide information and support to the parents of young people, in order for them to help promote young people's sexual health.
During the development of the Toolkit, it became clear that many practitioners who were working with parents could benefit from the expertise of teenage pregnancy co-ordinators. Similarly there were projects underway in the region that teenage pregnancy co-ordinators could benefit from, but were not always aware of. TSA was therefore commissioned to undertake a review of projects and organisations in the south-east, which aim to support the parents of young people. The aim was to help improve communication and co-working in this area.
The project
The project therefore aimed to review parenting projects and organisations in the south-east, and produce a directory. ‘South-east’, in this context, referred to the 19 local authority areas covered by the Government Office South East. The review focused on those providing support to parents with children of secondary school age.
The definition of ‘parenting support’ was kept broad, and included projects undertaken within statutory settings (e.g. YOTs, Social Services and education), as well as projects within the voluntary sector, such as parenting support centres, group-based parenting courses, and one-off projects. The Directory is now complete, and is available as both a paper-based and electronic resource.
Staff and funding
This project was funded by a grant from the regional teenage pregnancy co-ordinator. Amanda Holt and Debi Roker were responsible for this project.
