The parenting of 8-11 year-olds: A project to support practitioners working with this group of parents
Background
During 2004–2007 TSA undertook a major project, funded by DCSF. This project focussed on ways to support the parents of ‘pre-adolescents’ (defined as 8-11 year-olds), in particular during the move to secondary school. The key focus of the project was on providing information, tools, and support to practitioners who are working with this group of parents.
The project
There were three main components to this project:
- The development of a ‘Toolkit’ of information and resources for practitioners who are working with parents of 8-11 year-olds. This Toolkit, part of a series produced by TSA, is now available from TSA’s publications department. It includes: information and resources for work with this group of parents, research findings, examples of projects and interventions, group work activities, and sources of training and professional development.
- Workshops and conferences were run to disseminate learning and good practice, in relation to supporting this group of parents. In particular, we developed a one day training course in relation to the transition to secondary school.
- A Network was also been set up – this is a free Email Network to disseminate information, good practice, and innovations in this area. A key output is a termly 8-11s ‘newsletter’.
Note that many of the resources and learning from this project are available on TSA’s microsite ‘Parenting Teenagers’. See homepage for further details.
Timetable and staffing
The project will take place until March 2007. Julie Shepherd is the researcher responsible for the day-to-day running of the project, and Debi Roker is the grant holder and project manager.
