Adolescent Health Needs Assessment
This exciting new piece of work has been commissioned by Sandwell Children and Young People’s Partnership and Commissioning Unit.
It involves, firstly, reviewing local and national policies in relation to young people’s health in the Sandwell Primary Care Trust area. Secondly, it involves a review of local and national data and service provision in the area, including the identification of gaps in provision. This stage of the project will include interviews with a variety of local stakeholders, including strategic leads and service providers.
The third part of this project is to recruit and support a group of peer researchers locally, to collect information from other young people about adolescent health issues and services. A broad range of young people, representing the diversity of Sandwell’s population, will be recruited as peer researchers and to participate in the research. The young people will be responsible for designing the study, collecting the data, and interpreting it.
There will be a particular focus on ensuring that marginalised and disadvantaged groups of young people (for example Looked After young people, young parents, young people involved in the youth justice system) are able to participate, both as peer researchers and as participants in the research. The aim is to ensure young people’s active participation in the development of adolescent health services locally.
The project is being undertaken by Debi Roker and Kerry Devitt at YPF, and will be completed by the end of November 2009.
