Young people’s views about post-16 education opportunities in the Worthing area

Project background

TSA have been funded to explore young people’s perspectives of post-16 educational opportunities in the Worthing area. The project is funded by the Sussex Learning and Skills Council (SLSC). The LSC commissioned the research because of a concern that young people in the Worthing area are increasingly deciding to pursue further education in colleges outside of the area. One of the main aims of the research is to draw out exactly what it is that keeps young learners in the area, and conversely, what it is that draws them further afield. This information will be used by the LSC to review and if necessary revise the opportunities provided by colleges in the area.

The study

The research is being conducted through focus groups, individual interviews, and short questionnaires. We are exploring the views of those who are already in further education, and those who are in the process of making their choices. Thus students from both Year 11 (ie 15-16 year-olds) and in their first year of college (ie 16-17 year-olds) will be taking part. Sixteen sites have been invited to participate in the study, including ten secondary schools in Worthing, two FE colleges in Worthing, and four other Sussex-based colleges situated outside of the Worthing area. The aim is to collect data from approximately 80 students in total.

The young people will be asked their views about the colleges inside and outside of their local area, and whether they feel there is enough on offer to students. Related issues will also be explored, such as the students’ views of the advice and guidance provided when they are making decisions about their future. The study will also look at students' general views about staying on in education, or leaving, at age 16.

Timetable

The project started in August 2004, and will be completed by November 2004.
