The parenting of 8-11 year-olds:

A project to support practitioners working with this group
of parents

Background

In 2004, TSA received a significant new grant, to develop and extend our work in a key area of parenting. This concerns ways of supporting the parents of ‘pre-adolescents’ (defined as 8-11 year-olds), in particular during their child's move to secondary school. The key focus of the project is on providing information and support to practitioners who are working with this group of parents. This project is funded by a Family Support Grant from the Department for Education and Skills.

The project

There will be two main components to this project:

  1. The development of a ‘Toolkit’ of information and resources for practitioners who are working with parents of 8-11 year-olds. This Toolkit (part of a series produced by TSA) will include: information and statistics, examples of projects and interventions, group work activities, and a newsletter template which practitioners can amend according to the needs of the parents they work with.
  2. A Network will be set up for practitioners working in this area. This will involve an email network, training events, and conferences. The Network will aim to disseminate information, good practice, and innovations in this area.

Timetable and staffing

The project will take place until March 2007. Julie Shepherd is the researcher responsible for the day-to-day running of the project, and Debi Roker is the grant holder and project manager.
