One of the central goals of the Trust is to promote and support research in the fields of adolescence. To this end we have been instrumental in the establishment of the network, the NPRA, for those undertaking research into adolescence.

Network for Postgraduate Research in Adolescence (NPRA)

Background and Aim

The NPRA is run by the Trust for the Study of Adolescence (TSA), an independent applied research and training organisation based in Brighton. The Network was set up by TSA in 1991. It aims to provide practical and psychological support for PhD students undertaking research into adolescence, and to reduce the isolation of students working in this field.

Activities

The Network meets three times a year, in London. Meetings run from approximately 10.30-4, and are held at the National Children's Bureau, a short distance from Kings Cross. TSA is very grateful for the Bureau's support of the NPRA. Most meetings include the following:

  • Outside speakers: who at recent meetings have talked about: young people’s health, leisure and lifestyles, sexuality, political views, identity, and family relationships.
  • Group discussions: about topics such as methodologies, ethics, supervision, data analysis, writing up, and the viva.
  • Members’ presentations: usually one or two NPRA members present on their research at each meeting.
  • Information sharing: a wide range of information is shared during the day, about such things as conferences and events, new books and journals, and training courses or materials.

Membership and Funding

There are currently over 100 members of the Network, with around 20 attending each meeting. To be eligible to join, you must be registered (full-time or part-time) for a PhD and focussing primarily on young people. Members come from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, including education, psychology, sociology, social policy and geography. There is no fee for joining the Network, and if members cannot claim their travel expenses from their department, TSA will re-imburse these. Please note that all correspondence for this group is done by email.
Dates of Future Meetings

The next meetings will take place on:

  • November 8th 2007
