Understanding and Working with
Women in Custody

TSA and HM Prison Service published new training material for staff working with women in custody in May 2002. The pack won the International Corrections and Prisons Association Management and Staff Training Award in October 2002.

HM Prison Service’s Women's Policy Group commissioned the pack which is entitled Understanding and Working with Women in Custody. It follows on from TSA's previous successful training materials for staff working with young people in custody.

Female prisoners and the staff who work with them have helped shape the content of the programme. Prison staff at all grades and levels of experience from establishments across the UK contributed to the development of the materials. The programme also builds on separate research with women in custody undertaken by the author, Dr Anita Wilson for the University of North London.

The first phase of implementation began early in 2002 when representatives from all the female establishments in England attended training for trainers courses run by TSA.

The pack includes detailed instructions for trainers and comes with a video. The six modules cover:

  1. An Introduction to the course
  2. The staff role
  3. Working with families and friends
  4. Health and well-being
  5. Towards release and resettlement
  6. The staff perspective

The resource contains a template for a participant pack, OHT and Activity sheet originals, a 14-minute video and a resources section.

The training pack (181pp) is available from TSA Publications Department, price £110.45.
