Training for Working with Parents of Adolescents

Project Aims

  • to develop the workforce to effectively support the parents of adolescents
  • to initiate and increase direct work with the parents of adolescents
  • to build training capacity of the voluntary sector
  • to increase knowledge and understanding about the needs of parents whose young people have a mental health issue

The Project

Trained the trainers
We trained local trainers in both the Centre for Fun and Familes and Coram Family to deliver Supporting the Parents of Adolescents course and supported the trainers in the delivery.

Delivered Supporting the Parents of Adolescents in three areas.
We delivered the Supporting the Parents of Adolescents course in Greenwich, Leicester and Birmingham over the period of the project. The course is accredited in higher education and runs over six months. Most of the participants submitted their work for assessment through Middlesex University and 33 participants successfully passed and received 20 C.A.T. points.

Research
We conducted some qualitative research into the needs of parents whose young people had mental health issues. The research was published and disseminated.

Develop and pilot further training
We developed a specialist training day based on the research above which was aimed at practitioners who work with parents whose young people have a mental health issue. We piloted the training in the three areas and had the course evaluated.

Final re-write and publication of course
We invited feedback from the trainers and participants on the Supporting the Parents of Adolescents course and further adapted the course content.
