Parenting - Inside and Out: Supporting Young Parents in Custody and their Families (2006 - 2009)

This project improved parenting support to teenage parents in custody by finding the best ways of working with them and with their families. It did this by:

  • 'Mapping' who is providing support now and how they are doing it
  • Learning from parents and practitioners about what works best
  • Developing new materials and guidance with pilot projects
  • Sharing our learning with other organisations.

The project was designed to develop practice in providing parenting support for young parents in custody (under 18 year old fathers and mothers) and their parents/carers, to strengthen parenting within families.

The first stage of the project involved developing a 'map' of services designed to support young parents in custody and/or their parents and we have published this information on our website. The 'map' helps practitioners and managers working with young parents in custody and with their parents and families to:

  • Find out what's going on in your area and elsewhere and make contact with the staff involved
  • Learn about the range of interventions that can be offered
  • Read more detailed descriptions of some of the services provided
  • Access example forms, leaflets and other material used by some services

A Toolkit was launched in May 2009 that sets out the learning from its piloting work to devise and test new approaches to parenting support for young parents and their parents. The resource is based on what we have learnt from:

  • our interviews with parents
  • our work with partner pilot sites such as Hindley YOI, New Bridge Foundation with Castington YOI, Downview YOI and Barton Moss Secure Care Centre and
  • other organisations, such as KIDS VIP, Young Voice, Race Equality Foundation (Advisory Group) and Action for Prisoners Families (Advisory Group)

The project was funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). It was supported by colleagues from the Prison Service Women and Young People's Group, the Youth Justice Board, the Joint Youth Justice Unit (DCSF/MoJ), the Learning and Skills Council and the Teenage Pregnancy Unit at the DCSF.
