Creative Partnerships Project
Background
This project took place May 2005 to August 2006. It was a partnership between TSA’s Youth Voice programme, and Creative Partnerships, an Arts Council initiative in the Isle of Wight.
The aim of the project was to encourage the use of creative participative methods within the citizenship curriculum, particularly in issues related to emotional health and self esteem.
The Project
Youth Voice worked with a middle school on the transition to high school, and in a high school on setting up a Student Council. Creative methods in the curriculum areas of citizenship, personal and social education, art, literacy and communication were used. The project emphasised the importance of consultation and participation activities with students. The Youth Voice Core Advisory Team of young people advised on the project. Links were created between pupils in the two schools.
In the middle school, Year 8 pupils with special needs explored the theme of 'Onwards and Upwards' in preparation for the transition to high school in Autumn 2006. Self concept scales and diaries were used to monitor the pupils' progress.
The development of a school council was the focus for the project in the high school. Students in the sixth form were helped to work with class representatives from the whole school, and trained in the use of creative methods, to involve their peers in participation.
Staffing
Dorothy Eddi Piper was the project manager. She worked on this initiative with Saskia Neary and Marilyn McGowan.
