Supporting the Transition to Adulthood (T2A)
of Young People in the Criminal Justice System
Background
Young People in Focus has been funded for two years (2008-2010) to carry out work as part of the Barrow Cadbury Trust’s (BCT) Transition to Adulthood (T2A) Alliance. The Alliance is a broad coalition of organisations and individuals working to improve the opportunities and life chances of young people in their transition to adulthood, who are at risk of committing crime and falling into the criminal justice system. The project is building on the recommendations of the Barrow Cadbury Trust’s report Lost in Transition (2005).
Young People in Focus will help increase knowledge and understanding of issues related to the transition to adulthood and also identify examples of promising practice. The project will:
- Carry out research to create two new publications, Key Data on Young Adults and Supporting Young Adults in the Criminal Justice System – Examples of Promising Practice
- Disseminate the information in a wide range of ways including contributing to the T2A learning events being run by Clinks.
Key Data on Young Adults : This publication will be based upon Young People in Focus’ respected Key Data on Adolescence (published every two years and now in its sixth edition). It will be an accessible digest of facts and figures about young adults today and for the first time will distil a range of information from many sources on topics such as health and wellbeing; employment, education and training; family life and crime. It will provide policy makers and practitioners with authoritative information and commentary about young adults (18-24). The publication, which will be available in June 2009, will also explain the poorly understood recent changes in society that have contributed to making the transition to adulthood so significant for disadvantaged young people.
Supporting Young Adults in the Criminal Justice System – Examples of Promising Practice : Working with T2A Alliance members and other organisations, Young People in Focus will identify agencies that have made some headway in implementing the policies recommended by the T2A Alliance. Young People in Focus will then interview practitioners and young people in these agencies and create a publication that draws together case study material in a way that provides lots of practical examples that others can use to develop their own work. The material will be arranged thematically and ordered in a magazine-like style to include key questions, tips and learning points. We will also create a specialist microsite on our main website to present the material online in an engaging way. Key dates: publication (December 2009), microsite (April 2010).
