Promoting Wellbeing - boosting self-esteem in
young people
A one-day training course
This course looks at ways of promoting young people’s wellbeing. It looks at ways of helping young people feel positive about themselves and their lives. It considers what makes people happy and what professionals can and cannot to do help. It draws on theory and research and emphasises practical approaches.
It will cover:
- What we mean by terms like wellbeing, happiness and self-esteem
- What research tells us about what works and what does not in promoting wellbeing and self-esteem
- Developmental issues for young people
- Young people’s views about support
- Equality issues
- Practical ways of supporting young people
- Workers’ own experiences
- Identifying next steps for work after the course
The course enables participants to reflect on different issues related to their own wellbeing and self-esteem by experiencing activities that they can then use with young people.
Some of the handouts used on this course come from Helping Adolescents and Adults to Build Self-Esteem – a Photocopiable Resource Book by Deborah Plummer (2005), published by Jessica Kingsley Press. The book is available from Young People in Focus Publications.
