Engaging with Young People and Maintaining Good Communication

A two-day training course

What skills and personal qualities contribute to effective engagement with young people?
What helps and hinders good communication?
How can practitioners work well with young people in challenging circumstances?
How might organisational constraints affect engagement with young people?

Most practitioners recognise the need to engage well with young people, and many have a “natural” gift for doing this, but there is little specific training that focuses on what works well in different circumstances and for different purposes. This two-day course explores practical ways of establishing and maintaining dialogue with young people to facilitate personal change and enable them to influence society.

This course covers:

  • listening to young people
  • developing trust and respect
  • being yourself within professional boundaries
  • recognising power issues in relating to young people
  • overcoming obstacles to good communication
  • creative approaches and specific techniques
  • communicating for different purposes and in different contexts

The course will draw upon practice, research and theory. Above all, it will enable participants to reflect on their experience, share ideas and build on their own strengths.
