Self-harm among young people is a major public health issue in the UK and reflects significant levels of distress amongst young people. It also seriously affects their relationships with family and friends. There is concern that rates of self-harm are increasing. Self-harm is a major challenge to professionals in a diverse range of settings.

  • Explain the national context, including key policies and relate this to their own agency’s guidance and procedures
  • Recognise the demands and difficulties of working with young people who self-harm
  • Demonstrate practical strategies to promote and support a reduction in self-harming behaviour
