The course aims to improve the outcomes and quality of life for young people aged 16-25 in supported housing by offering this accredited training programme to workers, who are new to working with young people and/or new to supported housing. This is a post-induction training course which is accredited by OCN credit4learning and can be used towards gaining a qualification, such as an NVQ level 3.
Young people in supported housing are amongst the most disadvantaged and vulnerable, and workers offering essential support may make all the difference by helping them to make ‘small but significant steps towards a positive outcome’. The course, which has been informed by our research and consultation with managers, workers and young people, comprises of four training days and two assignments which are based on working with young people.
The course covers:
- Adolescence to adulthood – development and transitions
- Emotional wellbeing and mental health
- Roles, responsibilities and boundaries
- The role of the worker in becoming a “trusted adult”
- Building positive relationships with young people
- Approaches to the work – tools and techniques
- Improving social networks
- Working with other agencies
- Looking after yourself – managing stress
Accreditation: the course is accredited by OCN Credit4Learning and 9 units will be awarded to participants on completion of the two assignments.
Course work: participants will be expected to hand in two assignments during this course and should allow extra days in home study for this. The first assignment should be handed in after Day Two and the last one should be handed in after Day Four.
