Why do some young people cope with difficulties more easily than others? What factors really make a difference to how we deal with adversity? What can practitioners do to make a difference? ‘Resilience refers to the qualities which cushion a vulnerable child from the worst effects of adversity ... which can help a child or young person cope with, survive and even thrive in the face of great hurt and disadvantage’. Gilligan 1997
