NEW TRAINING COURSE
The Award for
Working with Vulnerable Young People
17 November 2011 and 28 February 2012 (Manchester)
2 May 2012 and 20 June 2012 (London)
This is a new qualification for people who work with young vulnerable people from any sector in the children and young people’s workforce, whether youth work, advice and guidance, health care, youth justice, the outdoors, or playwork.
We offer the following ABC accredited units as part of the award:
- Understanding vulnerability and need for support in young people
- Developing effective relationships with vulnerable young people
- Safeguarding vulnerable young people
- Supporting young people with mental health problems
- Reflective practice
Topics covered will include:
- Factors which increase vulnerability for young people
- Protection and safety
- Communications skills – listening and asking questions
- Understanding barriers to communication
- Young people, mental health and self-esteem
The qualification is based on workplace assessment and is similar in that sense to the practical aspects of an NVQ. You will work on a portfolio during the course with the support of the tutor. You will need to ensure that your workplace supervisor is happy to provide expert witness statements about aspects of your practice.
The portfolio will consist of evidence from a number of sources including: activities you have done during the training, evidence from the workplace, written case studies, presentations, a reflective journal and witness statements from a senior colleague.
The course structure
Training day one
The first day will be an interactive training day introducing the key topics of the course. You will receive a workbook to guide you through your learning. At the end of this day you will have agreed an assessment action plan for your portfolio with the tutor.
Telephone sessions will be arranged with your tutor in between the training days to support you in developing and reviewing your portfolio.
Training day two
This will consist of further exploration of topics, consolidation of the learning from the course and assessment interviews with tutor.
If portfolios require further action after this date, follow-up support can be provided for up to a month before the portfolio final assessment.
